Laurels

Daphne, pursued by the amorous Apollo, cried out to her father the river god to save her. He turned her into the first laurel tree. Unable to do a thing, Apollo made a wreath of her leaves to console himself and wore them always, prizing them above others, and awarded similar crowns to victors.
